RC transfer documents for a second hand bike

When you buy a used bike, the registration certificate (RC) must move into your name. Here is what the buyer and the seller need in Maharashtra. We help our customers with this paperwork.

Documents checklist

From the seller

  • Original RC (smart card, or the RC in DigiLocker)
  • Form 29, notice of transfer of ownership, signed (two copies)
  • Form 30, application for transfer of ownership, signed by seller and buyer
  • Valid insurance policy
  • Valid PUC certificate
  • Seller's ID proof

From the buyer

  • ID proof, such as Aadhaar
  • Address proof
  • PAN card, or Form 60 if you do not have one
  • Passport size photographs
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar, for the online OTP steps

Extra papers in some cases

Bike was bought on a loan
The bank or finance company's NOC and Form 35, so the loan (hypothecation) is removed from the RC before transfer.
Bike is registered with another RTO or another state
Form 28, the no objection certificate from the original RTO.
Original RC is lost
The seller must first apply for a duplicate RC. Do not buy a bike without the RC or a duplicate.

Time limits

Under Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the seller should report the sale to the RTO within 14 days when the bike stays in the same state, and the buyer should apply for transfer of the RC within 30 days. Until the RC shows the new owner, the old owner can still be held responsible for the bike, so it is in everyone's interest to finish the transfer quickly.

How the transfer is done

  1. Apply for Transfer of Ownership online on the Parivahan Vahan portal for the RTO where the bike is registered. Bikes registered in Vasai Virar usually carry an MH-48 number.
  2. Upload the documents, complete the Aadhaar OTP steps and pay the transfer fee online.
  3. Visit the RTO for inspection if your application asks for it.
  4. The new RC is issued in the buyer's name and sent by post. You can also see it in DigiLocker and mParivahan.
  5. Move the insurance policy into the buyer's name as well, so claims are not refused later.
